High School Musical is a made for Television musical which was released on January 20, 2006. This is not only one of the most successful Disney Channel original movies ever produced but one of the most popular. High School Musical was directed by Kenny Ortega, produced by Don Schain, and written by Peter Barsocchini. Stars of the movie include Zac Efron, Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu, and Monique Coleman.
The storyline centers around the production of a high school musical, Troy Bolton played by Zac Efron and Gabriella Montez played by Vanessa Anne Hudgens. Troy is the captain of the basketball team while Gabriella is a quiet transfer student that does very well in math and science. Both have dreams of singing and dancing, however, with their status quo in the school, trying out for school musical would be frowned upon by other students. Hiding behind their friends backs; they both try out for lead parts in the high school musical. They both finally ignore peer pressure and the rivalry that is apparent between the groups of students, to follow their dreams.
During the premiere broadcast in the United States, 7.7 million viewers tuned in while during the cable premiere in the UK around 835,000 viewers watch. This made High School Musical the most watched program for the Disney Channel in 2006.
